KATHMANDU, June 15: Nepal Telecom (NT) is increasing backbone bandwidth of its broadband to overcome problems in internet speed of its GPRS and ADSL services.

The state-owned telecom operator will double its backbone bandwidth to 4 GB from existing 2 GB within this week.

With the expansion of backbone bandwidth, customers of NT will be able to enjoy higher speed internet most likely in cheaper tariff. NT officials say the existing problem in internet connection and speed will also be resolved.[break]

NT Spokesperson Surendra Prasad Thike said NT has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two Indian telecom firms -- Tata Communication and Bharti Airtel - to increase its backbone bandwidth.

“The deal is expected to bring down the price of internet service as we have purchased bandwidth at cheaper rate,” an NT source said.

Thike said almost all preparations to expand bandwidth have already been completed. “We need to make only some technical preparations,” Thike said, adding, “The added bandwidth is likely to come into operation by this week.”
