KATHMANDU, April 5: The National Sports Council (NSC) on Monday threatened to dissolve the sports associations which have not conducted election for their executive bodies and are inactive for years.

Organizing a press conference on Monday, the council said it would not let any association continue on ad hoc basis. [break]

The NSC warning came after the Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) opposed the council´s decision to dissolve Nepal Gymnastic Association (NGA) and Nepal Kabaddi Association (NKA) claiming that the decision violated the Olympic Charter.

"You have already seen two examples; we´ll not let any association continue in ad hoc state and without holding any activity," said NSC Member Secretary Hari Babu Chaudhary. NSC has dissolved the NGA headed by NOC President Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan last week and the NKA headed by NOC Member Sunil Rajkarnikar three weeks before.

"Sports organizations are not paternal properties and nobody can stay in positions without sporting activities," states a press release issued by the council.

NSC also strongly condemned NOC´s statements. "When they (NOC officials) were in power, they had dissolved even the elected bodies and they are now talking about the Olympic Charter when we are dissolving those associations, which were inactive for years and created controversies," said Chaudhary, apparently referring to NOC General Secretary Jivan Ram Shrestha, who had dissolved 15 associations when he was NSC member secretary.

NSC also alleged NOC of not providing information about the Youth Olympic Games scheduled to be held in Singapore. Chaudhary said NSC is unaware of the Games and preparations for them.

"The council and the government have to arrange for all expenses in such tournaments. However, NOC is trying to bypass us and directly corresponding with the associations," reads the NSC statement.

Land sought for gold medalists

The council requested the government to provide five aanas of land to each gold medalist of the 11th South Asian Games.

Chaudhary informed the press that they have forwarded the proposal to this effect to the Council of Ministers through the Ministry of Youth and Sports. "We have asked for the land in Kathmandu Valley," he said.

Likewise, Chaudhary informed that NSC is offering permanent jobs to all gold medalists and planning how other medal winners can be given job offers.

Chaudhary also informed that NSC is handing over cash prizes to SAG medalists next Sunday. NSC had declared cash prize of Rs 300,000 each to gold medalists in individual events. Likewise, silver and bronze medalists were promised of Rs 200,000 and Rs 100,000 each respectively.

Likewise, NSC had announced Rs 100,000 to each member of the gold winning team events and Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 to each member of the silver and bronze medal winning teams, respectively.
