KATHMANDU, Nov 20:  Prime Minister Sushila Karki said that she could not expand the cabinet as the names proposed by the Gen Z representatives were deemed unsuitable. She said that the government, formed with a special election mandate, does not have the discretion to add more ministers than necessary.

Speaking to Nagarik Frontline, aired every Wednesday evening by Nepal Republic Media, Prime Minister Karki said the cabinet was initially planned to have 11 members but an understanding was reached to make it 12. After adding the Health and Sports Minister for the third time on October 27, the cabinet currently stands at 10 members. The Prime Minister herself manages eight ministries, including the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers.

Although there were plans to complete the cabinet by including two representatives from the Gen Z community, Karki said no more ministers would be appointed as no suitable and uncontested names were proposed. She emphasized that even while handling seven ministries, she consults with all ministers as needed to ensure regular functioning. She also said that day-to-day operations are efficiently managed by the ministry staff, making additional ministers unnecessary.
