KATHMANDU, Sept 1: At a time when market monitoring in the Valley is being pursued aggressively, it has remained virtually non-existent in the nearby district of Kavre.

There has been no market monitoring activities since mid-August last year and the concerned authority has shown no interest in resuming the market inspection drive. [break]

“We made field visits whenever we received complaints, but it is difficult for us to carry out regular monitoring due to lack of human resource,” said Kavre Chief District Officer Nandakishore Tripathi.

“The staff at the district office themselves are consumers and they are aware about market prices and activities. The officials should change their old habit of conducting monitoring only upon receiving complaints,” said Asim Koirala, a student at Kavre campus.

He added that as local business entrepreneurs have established nexus with the administrative officials, consumers do not dare to complain.

According to him, the skyrocketing prices of commodities mostly affect the students.

Sharada KC, a housewife, said that the price of essential commodities in Kavre has increased drastically. “The prices of commodities increase almost every day,” she added.
