Party sources said NC has proposed party´s vice president Prakash Man Singh and joint secretary Bimalendra Nidhi, besides Nilambar Acharya, who is an NC-nominated CA member, for the post. A senior NC leader said since Singh has already refused to fight for the post for lack of time.
Though media is abuzz with the name of Acharya for long, there is no consensus on his name, as many fear that he may not maintain the party stance on crucial issues during constitution drafting process. Acharya has abstained crucial votings as he has been publicly saying that he is an independent candidate.
“Since Nepali Congress can not get its candidate elected on its own, we are mulling to nominate a candidate after holding consultations with other parties,” said a senior NC leader, asking to remain unnamed.
The leader said the party will most likely nominate Nidhi for the post if the party could garner support for him from other political parties. “However, it all depends on the support the NC could garner from other political parties on his behalf,” he added. “Else, NC will field Acharya as its candidate for the post.”
NC President Girija Prasad Koirala on Thursday asked UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal to support the NC candidate. Koirala, however, did not name the NC candidate then. The NC has also asked 22 parties to support its candidate during the election scheduled for Monday.
In the meantime, UML on Friday held separate meetings with NC and Maoists, before holding a three-party meeting, to forge a consensus on the post.
The Maoists have staked their claim for the post that is vacant ever since the then head of the committee Madhav Kumar Nepal became prime minister on May 23.
Lately, small political parties have also shown their interest to head the committee. But NC has smelt rat in their interest. “The Maoists have encouraged them to claim the post, sensing that the post could go to the NC,” an NC leader told myrepublica.com.
The three-party meeting at the prime minister´s office could not arrive at consensus on the issue as both the NC and the Maoists did not relinquish their claim for the post. The Maoists have named Dr Baburam Bhattarai for the post.
A UML leader said the party is in favor of electing the CC chain through consensus. “We are strictly against going for a voting for the post, no matter which party the candidate belongs to,” said UML Secretary Yuvraj Gyawali.
In the three-party meeting, Maoists asked the UML to support their candidate as they had supported UML leader Nepal to the same post in the past.
