Nepali people want democratic statute: Prez

KATHMANDU, May 23: Urging one and all to uphold the spirit that ´we are all Nepali´, President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav urged the politial parties to promulage a democratic constitution at the earliest.



Addressing the inagural ceremony of the Nepal Army Institute of Health and Science (NAIHS) situated at Bhandarkhal on Wednesday, President Yadav said that promulgation of the constiutiton is already late. [break]



“Nepal and the Nepali people want a democratic constitution,” he said, adding, “I, as president, say that the nation should be given a way out.” He added that the nation will have a way out if it is given a democratic constitution.



He expressed dismay with the political parties for dilly-dallying in drafting the constitution and added, “If all the parties come to a common point, it is possible to promulgate the constitution.”



President Yadav added that we should make efforts to preserve the multiracial, multireligious, multicultural and multi-geographical character of the country, saying that these constitute our pride.



He stated that public services in the country have become derelict due to the political ups and downs. “Public services are at their worst and the political leaders are responsible for this,” he said. President Yadav even accused ministers of turning public services into a ´football´.



He lauded the Nepal Army (NA) for establishing such a large health institute and urged the NA to upfold its pride. “I wish the NA remains outside external influence,” he said.



Likewise, President Yadav lamented the deterioration of the health sector in Nepal, especially the condition of Bir Hospital.



Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Krishna Prasad Situala, the chiefs of the three security services, Nepal-based foreign ambassadors, secretaries of ministries and former army chiefs, among others, were present at the inaguration.



In a bid to provide quality education at reasonable cost and produce skilled manpower, the NA started construction of the institute two years ago. A college of medicine and a college of nursing are already in operation under the institute and the NA is planning to start a medical polytechic and a dental college in the near future.
