Speaking with myrepublica.com, Dr Hari Dahal, spokesperson, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, said the government would request the Indian side to sell Urea and DAP (diammonium phosphate) and seeds of cereal crops for drought-hit areas.

“We have already forwarded our demands to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Dr Dahal said.

Realizing the lack of effective mechanism in maintaining food quality, the high-level delegation will also request the Indian government to assist in developing infrastructures like modern laboratories and upgrade the capacity of quarantine posts along the Nepal-India border, according to Dr Dahal.

“We have suggested the Foreign Ministry to solicit Indian assistance for strengthening quality control mechanism in food, livestock and livestock products,” Dr Dahal added. He further added that the MoAC had recommended the ministry to ask for Indian assistance in human resource development through academic study and advanced trainings.

Nepal is likely to seek Indian assistance to speed up the process to set up Deemed University -- a research center at Nepal Agriculture Research Center (NARC). The government declared to open Deemed University through the budget for 2007/08 fiscal year.

“Support from India will be necessary to enhance physical infrastructure of the Deemed University. This will help strengthen the agriculture research works in Nepal,” he added.

The Nepali side will also seek Indian assistance to irrigate more arable land in Tarai, bread-basket of the country, by increasing number of shallow tube wells and deep tube wells.

Nepal will ask the southern neighbor to support in proper documentation of information related to the agriculture sector through concerned government agencies.
