KATHMANDU, Dec 31: Nepal has secured second place in the 17th International Open Karate Championship, which saw the participation of players from SAARC countries.
In the previous edition of the competition, Nepal won the most medals. This time, the country secured 27 medals—including 18 gold, seven bronze, and two silver—to finish second overall.
A total of 22 players from Nepal, including 11 women, competed across different age and weight categories in the championship held in Pune, India.

Basanta Roka Kshetri, Giri Pun, and Milan Gaha served as officials of the Nepali team. Milan Gaha informed RSS that Siankaji Rana represented Nepal at the SAARC-level competition, which featured 470 players.
At the closing ceremony, Goju-Ryo Karate Nepal’s chief coach Kaji Rana expressed confidence that such regional and international sporting events play a vital role in strengthening camaraderie, friendship, and sports diplomacy among participating nations.
Vice President of the Maharashtra Olympic Association, Manoj Bohare, presented medals to the winning players.
India finished first by winning 37 medals, including 22 gold, 10 silver, and five bronze. Sri Lanka secured third place in the two-day competition, which featured players from Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and Bangladesh.
The International Open Karate Championship was organized by Japan Karate-Do Nabukah Shito-Ryu Karate and coordinated by Kyokushin Karate champion Raju Thapa of Maharashtra.
