The program, jointly organized by various youth organizations, including Youth Initiative, Action Now, and Yes Nepal, among others, brought together 30 high school students and 15 youth representatives to a one day collaborative, action-oriented discussion on civic engagement with experts in political and social entrepreneurships.
The conference, according to the organizers, "sought to promote the vision of scholarship, leadership and citizenship."
"The conference will seek to resolve questions of the youth regarding entrepreneurship at social and political level," said Mona Aditya, secretary, external affairs, Nepal ko Yuwa.
Divided into two sections -- ´Social Entrepreneurship Panel´ and ´Political Entrepreneurship Panel´ -- the conference dwelt upon potential problems of entrepreneurship in various sectors.
The Social Entrepreneurship Panel had Anil Chitrakar, social entrepreneur, Ashutosh Tiwari, WaterAid´s country director, Bal Krishna Joshi, co-founder and manager of Thamel.com, Kiran Shrestha, leader at nepa~laya, and Mahabir Pun, the man behind wireless technology in remote areas of Nepal, in the expert panel.
Avishek Pratap Shah, member of the youth advisory panel for the United Nations Development Program in Nepal, Hemraj Bhandari, one of the youngest elected member of the
Constituent Assembly, Kalyan Gurung, the immediate vice-president of Nepal Students´ Union, Narayan Shrestha, presenter of Sajha Sawaal, a debate show, and Rabindra Mishra, the chief of British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Nepali Service, donned the Political Entrepreneurship panel.
Throughout the conference, experts gave out advice and answered queries put forth by the youth.
While Anil Chitarakar advised youngsters to come up with practical ideas and not look for rhetorical answers, Mahabir Pun´s words in the same section were more of encouragement.
"If you think you can do it, nothing should stop you," he said.
The Political Entrepreneurship part was even more intriguing with the participating youth questioning the leaders about the current political turmoil and asking for solutions.
Sailesh Dhungana, a youth participant, asked whether or not it was possible for all the youth leaders to give up their political parties and form a new youth association and work towards change? "We have seen how much the current leaders can, and will do. Is it not possible for the youth to take over now?" he questioned.
Arguing that since it was impossible to abandon their affiliated parties, Rabindra Mishra advised all the youth of political parties to do their best from their respective sides.
The conference concluded with a call on the youth to submit their project proposal on ´social entrepreneurship´ by February 15. The selected projects will be financed by various youth organizations.
