The MCC board cited the recent landmark agreements between Nepal´s political parties in conformity to the Comprehensive Peace Accord as the factors that prompted the decision. [break]
Issuing a press statement on Friday, the US Embassy welcomed MCC´s decision saying it recognized the progress Nepal has made in advancing peace and prosperity for its people.
“We look forward to the Government of Nepal´s leadership in working with MCC and the Embassy in designing a threshold program that will continue to advance the government´s efforts to create a democratic state focused on meeting the needs of the citizens of Nepal,” reads the statement.
MCC is an independent US foreign aid agency that is helping lead the fight against global poverty. Qualifying for MCC assistance is a competitive process in which a country´s performance on 17 different policy indicators is assessed.
