Nepal beat Thailand

KATHMANDU, Feb 18: Nepal defeated Thailand by 21 runs in the opening day of the ACC Women´s Twenty20 Cricket Championship on Friday at KEC Ground, Kuwait, avenging their defeat in the group stage of the last edition held in Malaysia in 2009.



Winning the toss Nepal opted to bat first and set a score of 75 runs off 18.4 overs. [break]



Nepal lost their wickets in quick intervals against the impressive bowling from Thailand. Nepal lost their openers Manish Rawal and Sita Rana Magar for ducks with each facing four balls. Rashmi Sharma, too, was unable to give a start to the Nepali team as she was sent back to the pavilion after playing only three balls.



Women of the Match, Janaki Bhatta, who came after the fall of sixth wicket, was the highest scorer for Nepal with 25 runs off 19 balls. Captain Nary Thapa scored 10 runs off 18 balls.



Nira Rajopadhyaya scored 7 off 19, Madhu Thapa 5 off 11, Rubina Chhetri 4 off 14 and debutant Karuna Bhandari added 4 off 17 while Mamata Thapa was not out at three runs off 10 balls.



For the Thai side, Narumon Srisuwan took two wickets in her four-over spell while Phiraon Khamla, Nattakan Chantam, Nantanit Khonchan, Nattaya Boochatham and RAtanaporn Padunglerd took a wicket each. Three of the Nepal batswomen were run out by the tight fielding of Thailand.



With good bowling from Karuna Bhandari and Sarita Magar, Thailand were bowled out on 18.1 overs at a score of 54 runs.



Bhandari bagged three wickets conceding only 12 runs in her four overs bowling while Magar took two wickets for eight runs in four overs. Rashmi Chaulagain and Rubina Chhetri grabbed a wicket each while three of Thailand batswomen were short to the crease.



Khamla was the highest scorer for the Thai team with 13 runs. Three of the Thailand players were out on duck and rest of the players were limited by Nepali bowlers below a double figure score.



Nepal will play against UAE on Saturday.
