Kathayat, who was from Khajuri in Birendranagar, was undergoing treatment at Mid-Western Regional Hospital after a piles operation. [break]
He was given the painkillers Phortuin and Phenargan on July 28 without considering the possible risks of that medication and he passed away within 45 minutes.
According to the report, the medicine was prescribed by Dr Sanjiv Tiwari though the operation was performed by Dr Ganesh Thapa.
“When a doctor on duty prescribes a medicine it is his/her duty to consult the doctor who operated on the patient,” reads the report, adding “Lack of such consultation shows the doctors unconcerned for the patient´s health.”
The report also states that the doctor and nurses did not inform the patient´s relatives on time about the effect of the medicines.
“These medicines have an effect on the heart and respiratory system, and the patient cannot be left without supervision as in the case of regular medication,” explained a doctor from the hospital. “May be that was the cause of death.”
The committee has recommended that the hospital see to the education and livelihood of Kathayat´s two under-aged sons.
