KATHMANDU, Dec 1: Accusing the president of not being serious about indigenous issues, Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) has said that consensus reached only among the major three political parties-Nepali Congress (NC), UCPN (Maoist) and CPN-UML-and United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) could not considered a national consensus.

Organizing a press conference in the capital on Saturday afternoon, indigenous leaders maintained they must be taken into confidence while arriving at a consensus in order to end the present political and constitutional crisis. [break]

"Leaders from indigenous, Muslim, Dalit and other marginalized communities must be taken into confidence before arriving at any consensus on ending the current crisis in the country," said General Secretary of NEFIN Ang Kaji Sherpa.

He also warned major political parties that they should not underestimate the issues of identity and federalism while forging consensus. "It is very regretful that the talks of political parties have focused on picking a prime minister rather than forging consensus on ending the present deadlock," read a press statement released by NEFIN.

Stating that the major four forces could not resolve the current problems seen in the country, the umbrella organization of indigenous nationalities expressed dissatisfaction over President Ram Baran Yadav´s call major parties to pick a prime ministerial candidate through consensus.

Sherpa said it would not be acceptable to them, if the president tried to exercise executive power in the name of making political parties forge consensus. "The interim constitution has not envisioned the president exercising any executive power. So, the president should not try to be active in this regard," he added.

NEFIN has also requested the president to start holding discussion with leaders from indigenous, Muslim, Dalit and other marginalized communities in order to find solution to the current crisis.

Meanwhile, NEFIN has said that it would launch protest programs against the report of latest census. Indigenous leaders claimed that the census was unscientific and wrong stating that it has lost 10 different castes of indigenous community.
