A 10-member team which includes Gurung and two Bangladeshi nationals will leave Kathmandu on Tuesday. The team led by Temba Dorje Sherpa aims to conquer the summit of Everest between May 5 and 13.[break]
“We will reach the base camp in four days after leaving Kathmandu tomorrow (Tuesday). We will rest there for about four days and then begin the ascent. We might reach the top between May 5 and 13,” said Sherpa.
Gurung, after having scaled 5800m Tilicho and Pisang Peak (6155m), is daring to go ahead with his two-decade-old plan of climbing the world´s highest peak. He had conquered Tilicho in 1988 and Pisang in 1994 but he thirsted to climb atop the Everest.
His dream is not just limited to scaling the summit as he is also a supporter of the campaign to remove garbage from the Everest.
“I was deeply moved on seeing the cleaning campaign conducted by students from New Zealand when I reached the Everest Base Camp on my mountain bike in 1990. I extended my stay for a week and joined them. I went there again after three years with the sole purpose of getting involved in the cleaning. It was then that I realized it is our responsibility to keep the environment clean,” said Gurung during a farewell program organized by NOC on Monday.
NOC President Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan, General Secretary Jiwan Ram Shrestha and other officials bade farewell to Gurung.
Sherpa, who has climbed Everest in eight hours and 10 minutes, wants to set a record by scaling Everest as well as Lhotse within 24 hours.
Other members of the team are Abdul Moid and Saujal Khalit from Bangladesh as well as Zamgbu Sherpa, Dawa Kipa Sherpa, Mingma Chiri Sherpa, Phurba Tenzing Sherpa and Binod Adhikari, The team also includes a woman climber Nawang Futi Sherpa.
