NC-UML to maintain earlier stance; 3-party meeting Monday

KATHMANDU, Oct 30: A joint meeting of two major opposition parties—Nepali Congress and CPN-UML—has decided to hold firm to their earlier stance on the integration number and rehabilitation package for Maoist combatants.



The meeting held at the UML’s parliamentary party office in Singha Durbar on Sunday decided to forge a common instance on the contentious issues of the peace process at the three-party meeting, NC’s Krishna Prasad Sitaula told reporters after the meeting. [break]



The top brass meeting of the three major parties including UCPN (Maoist), which was earlier scheduled for today, will take place on Monday, Situala informed.



NC and UML have been insisting to integrate 5,000 combatants, whereas Maoists have been demanding to integrate 7,000 combatants out of the 19,000-odd ex-PLA fighters.



Similarly, the two major opposition parties have been insisting to provide Rs 300,000 to Rs 500,000 each to the combatants whereas Maoists have sought Rs 700,000 to Rs 100,000 each for the combatants willing to go for rehabilitation.



Present in today’s meeting were NC President Sushil Koirala, leaders Ram Chandra Paudel, Prakashman Singh and Sitaula. Likewise, UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal, senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal and leaders Ashok Rai, Bhim Rawal and Surendra Pandey attended the meeting.
