MAHENDRANAGAR, March 5: The agitating students have continued their protests on the fourth consecutive day on Thursday in Mahendrangar, the district headquarters of Kanchanpur, demanding establishment of a Far-West Regional University in Mahendranagar.

The students have continued with the protests despite the government´s announcement to open a university in the far-west as well.

Political parties and civil society members in a meeting held Wednesday evening decided to hold joint demonstration with the agitating students. Main opposition Nepali Congress, second largest ruling party Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), and Rastriya Janamorcha (RJ) have decided to support the ongoing agitation.

"The three political parties have jointly decided to support students´ agitation," said Lokendra Lamsal, central member of RJ. Over 60 local institutions based in Mahendranagar have expressed solidarity to the ongoing agitation.

At least 43 students and 11 policemen were injured during the clashes between the two sides on Wednesday.

Businesses in Mahendranagar market and local educational institutions have remained closed on Thursday. Additional security forces from Kailali district have been dispatched to Mahendranagar.
