KATHMANDU, May 2: The main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) has demanded that the government immediately call a parliamentary session to amend Article 70 of the interim constitution that proposes a short-cut to promulgating the new constitution.

NC made the demand following a meeting of its parliamentary party on Wednesday. [break]

"A bill to amend article 70 of the constitution has already matured in parliament but the government has shown no signs of calling parliamentary session anytime soon," said NC parliamentary leader Ram Chandra Paudel after the meeting on Wednesday, "We demand that the government call parliamentary session immediately."

Arguing that article 70 directly relates to constitution making, Paudel said, "The delay in amending the article has cast doubts on whether the government is sincere toward promulgating the new constitution," said Paudel.

However, NC lawmakers close to senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba argued that the parliamentary party should not take any decision in this regard as the party´s central committee and lawmakers on Thursday had already authorized top party leaders to take the decisions on constitution making.
