KATHMANDU, Jan 9: Nepali Congress (NC) has postponed a press conference scheduled for Friday at the last minute. The press meet, slated for 1:00 PM at the party’s central office in Sanepa, Lalitpur, and described as an important one, was abruptly called off.
“This press release is issued to inform everyone that the press conference scheduled to be held today at 1:00 PM at the central office of the Nepali Congress has been postponed,” reads a press notice issued by the party’s Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Poudel.
However, the press release did not cite any reason for the postponement.
RSP postpones press conference
NC Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka had invited leaders from the anti-establishment faction led by Shekhar Koirala.
Meanwhile, NC anti-establishment factions, including General Secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, are working in full swing to ensure that the special general convention takes place on the slated dates—January 11 and 12—at Bhrikutimandap.
The NC establishment faction has not only been calling for a halt to the special general convention but has also termed it illegitimate. It has issued a press statement urging convention delegates not to attend. Despite repeated calls to reconsider the decision, the rival camp has not heeded the appeals.
In the meantime, supporters of the special general convention have already begun arriving in Kathmandu from different parts of the country.
Following the move by General Secretaries Thapa and Sharma, speculation has grown that the special convention could lead to a split within the party.
