KATHMANDU, Feb 2: Due to bitter dispute in the Nepali Congress, the party was unable to pick its prime ministerial candidate on Tuesday. The party has called its Central Working Committee meeting for Wednesday to endorse the name of the party´s prime ministerial candidate.

An informal meeting of the party´s office bearers and CWC members held at the residence of party President Sushil Koirala at Maharajgunj Tuesday evening took the decision. [break]

Party top leaders are scheduled to hold an informal meeting before the CWC meeting that is set to begin at 9 a.m., according to CWC member Arjun Narsingh KC.

Senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba boycotted the meeting, apparently to show his dissatisfaction over the nomination of nine CWC members by President Koirala on Monday.

During the meeting, party leaders close to Deuba had asked Koirala to keep the option open for another prime ministerial candidate from the party if there was a possibility of winning the prime ministerial election. The party´s parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Paudel, however, insisted that he had every chance of winning the election.

According to Dilendra Prasad Badu, who is close to Koirala, the informal meeting has reached an understanding to give Deuba a chance to become the party´s prime ministerial candidate if he presents credible prospects for winning the election. “Else, the parliamentary party leader will be the prime ministerial candidate,” he said.

The leaders close to Deuba also expressed dissatisfaction over the nominations made by the party president, saying that these have failed to ensure proportionate representation. “If you want to rule the party though majority vote you can go ahead,” a leader was quoted as saying to Koirala.

Bimalendra Nidhi, Gopal Man Shrestha, Purna Bahadur Khadka, Nara Hari Acharya, Amod Prasad Upadhyaya, Shashanka Koirala, Ananda Prasad Dhungana, Dip Kumar Upadhyaya and Krishna Sitaula were among those present at the meeting.
