NA has written to the Ministry of Defense stating that there was no need of sending its representatives to the taskforce as they had already submitted suggestions to various taskforce formed earlier regarding the issue. [break]
“We had accepted the ministry´s request to send our representatives. However, the issue of sending representatives depends on coordination between the ministry and the headquarters. Hence, we had decided not to send our representatives now,” said Brigadier General Purna Chandra Thapa, chief of Directorate of Welfare Schemes, at a press meet organized at the Army headquarters.
Referring to media reports that questioned transparency of the fund, Thapa claimed that NA was abiding by the guidelines from Nepal Rastra Bank in depositing the fund in various financial institutions. Ironically, he said about Rs 490 million of the Welfare Fund continues to remain at risk in various such institutions.
Thapa also conceded that NA had failed to document US$ 28,000 at the Himalayan Bank, as reported in the annual report of the Auditor General.
“We had overlooked the issue as it is a matter of the past. However, it is not US$ 2.8 million that we have failed to document as surfaced in media reports,” he said.
