As part of the campaign, Nepal Muslim Committee has also started collecting data about persons who took dowries. The committee was formed four months ago.
According to Haidar Ali, a member of the committee, the campaign would primarily raise awareness in communities against dowry system and in the next phase start taking action against those who are found to have taken dowries.
“We will penalize those who are known to have taken dowries,” said Haidar. “The campaign has garnered vast support among the Muslim communities as the system exists as a widespread social malady.” The campaign has been reinforced with support from Muslim religious leaders.
The anti-dowry rule has been enforced in Muslim communities of Itahari and Inaruwa Municipality and Bhutaha, Bhokraha, Pakali and Khanar VDCs among others.
