KATHMANDU, March 22: Accusing the government and political parties of being indifferent to the Muslim community, Madrasa Islamia Sangh Nepal, an umbrella organization of Muslim religious teachers, on Thursday demanded that their identity be recognized in the new constitution.

“If our demands are not addressed, we will take to the streets after three weeks,” said Bhola Siddiqui, general secretary of Ulema Sangh, at a press meet organized at Reporters´ Club Nepal. [break]

Stating that it would be unacceptable to the Muslim community if they are recognized as Madhesis, he said the constitution must guarantee separate identity to Muslims.

The Sangh has also demanded guarantee of Muslim representation in all state mechanisms in proportion to their population.

Siddiqui said they would organize a gathering of Muslim religious teachers in a bid to exert pressure on the government to ensure their rights in the new constitution.
