The largest and second largest parties - U-CPN (Maoist) and NC respectively - have staked their claims for the post.
"In the meeting, we put forth our claim for the post and friends from NC also staked their claim. We could not reach any agreement on the matter," Maoist deputy parliamentary party leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha told reporters after the meeting.
Both Maoist and NC leaders are trying to garner support from the third largest party CPN-UML.
Maoist Chairman and erstwhile prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal had proposed senior UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal for the post earlier. But, later NC played a key role in electing Nepal as prime minister.
"This time, we have urged the UML to back our candidate," said Shrestha.
But the NC is also pressing UML to support its candidate saying that the NC played a key role in electing him prime minister.
