DANG, March 28: CPN-UML Secretary Yubraj Gyawali has described demands by Maoists put forth as condition to push ahead the integration ex-PLA combatants in the Nepal Army as a tactic to hold influence in the national army.

Speaking at a program organized the Dang chapter of Reporters Club in Tulsipur on Wednesday; Gyawali said the Maoist demand for second-in-command at the army directorate reflects the former rebels’ motive for unduly influencing the national army. [break

The UML leader also warned against bringing any kind of politics into the institution of national army and said his party is strictly for upholding professionalism and bringing democratic transformation in the NA.

Gyawali singled out the issue of state restructuring as the only dispute now remaining to resolved and stressed on holding, among political parties, more serious discussions for its settlement so as to be able to promulgate the new constitution within the set deadline.

He also asked Maoists to do away with their ‘unusual penchant for arms and authoritarian leftist ideology’ and said the current political stalemate on both the peace and statute fronts will be resolved once Maoists act on the seven-point deal in good faith.
