After their last Standing Committee meeting, the Maoists had publicly told the media that they would move the SC against the government´s reluctance to agree to the Maoist proposal to extend UNMIN´s term.[break]
“It was not a decision as such. We had however deliberated on the possibility as UNMIN´s term extension is related to the Interim Constitution, but we did not go to that direction,” said Maoist Vice-chairman Narayankaji Shrestha.
Shrestha said that the ongoing peace process would be reduced to the state of ceasefire between the government and the Maoists after UNMIN´s exit and for lack of any mechanism to monitor the Maoist combatants and the Nepal Army (NA).
“At the last three-party meeting, we proposed forming a taskforce to review UNMIN´s tasks and develop a monitoring mechanism in the absence of UNMIN. But the Nepali Congress (NC) vehemently opposed our proposal,” said Shrestha, adding that the government is bent on disrupting the peace process. “It has raised serious questions over their commitment to the peace process,” he said.
The Maoist vice-chairman stated that the ruling parties want the Special Committee to take over all the tasks of UNMIN and take the NA out of the monitoring by the Special Committee, adding that it would amount to the violation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed between the government and the Maoists.
