KATHMANDU, March 27: A meeting of the UCPN (Maoist) and Nepali Congress (NC) on Tuesday evening reached an understanding that the integration of Maoist combatants should be completed soon but differed over cutting short the formal process of screening the combatants for integration into the Nepal Army.

"We discussed integration and told the Maoist leaders that the integration process should not be obstructed once it starts," said NC leader Minendra Rijal, refusing to provide details of the meeting, "We also heard their (Maoists´) opinion on the issue." [break]

According to sources, though the NC leaders agreed in principle with the Maoists on completing the integration process as soon as possible, they argued that the screening process should not be cut short. But Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai stressed on early completion of the integration process.

Dahal and Bhattarai held a meeting with NC leaders Rijal, Ram Sharan Mahat and Krishna Sitaula at Dahal´s residence on Tuesday evening discussing ways to complete the integration process in the shortest possible time.

They discussed early completion of the peace process after they came to know from the secretariat that the integration process would take three months to complete.

"But we cannot afford the delay," said a leader on condition of anonymity.
