Maoist team embarks on Everest expedition

KATHMANDU, April 4: An Everest expedition team co-led by Prakash Dahal, son of the UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, left for Lukla, Solukhumbu, in its bid to scale the world´s tallest peak.



Earlier, the 11-member team, whom the government decided to provide Rs 20 million for its expedition, had announced not to accept the money following widespread protest in what the funds allocation was described as a misuse of state coffers. [break]



The Maoist team has managed funds for the expedition from donations. An emotional Maoist Chairman Dahal saw off the team members offering them garlands and wishing them success at his residence in Lazimpat this morning.



The team has embarked on the expedition named Lumbini-Mt Everest Peace Campaign highlighting the need for peace and the new constitution in the country. The team will spent around two months at the Everest base camp.



Besides Dahal, the team includes Maoist central committee member Krishna KC, Maoist PLA brigade commanders Saral and Sarad and party-aligned All Nepal National Free Students Union (Revolutionary) activists Bina Magar and Ishu Bhatta.
