A meeting of the alliance held at Singha Durbar on Monday, has decided to withdraw its protest programs called with a view to piling pressure on the ruling parties for consensus-based constitution. However, the alliance has decided to impose the general strike called for April, 7, 8 and 9. "We have decided to withdraw some of our protest programs to make the general strike after April 7 more effective," said, UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal at a press meet on Monday.
The decision of the alliance comes shortly after UCPN (Maoist) Chief Dahal's China visit last week.
Waving black flags at prime minister and ministers, obstructing them from attending public functions, picketing government offices, imposing general strike, shutting down government offices, obstructing revenue and tax collection were among the protest activities planned by the UCPN(Maoist) led opposition alliance. "We revised our protest activities keeping in view the impacts they would have on the general public," said Spokesperson of the opposition alliance Prem Bahadur Singh.
However, the alliance has decided to give continuity to its earlier programs to boycott the meeting of the Constituent Assembly (CA). CA meeting has been summoned for April 6. Out of 30 parties in the alliance, 19 are represented in the CA.
Similarly, the main opposition UCPN (Maoist)-led alliance has decided not to hold talks with the ruling parties unless the latter forwarded a concrete proposal for consensus. "There is no point in holding talks unless the ruling parties come up with a commitment to draft new statute on the basis of peace accord, interim constitution and other past agreements," said Dahal. "Now we are not going to hold any talks with the ruling parties unless they come up with a concrete proposal." The opposition alliance has taken the decision after CA Chairman Subas Nembang summoned the CA meeting for April 6.
