KATHMANDU, Aug 12: Unified CPN (Maoist) has objected further works on Pancheshwar Hydropower Project unless a national consensus is reached on controversial issues.

Speaking at the meeting organized to brief cabinet and senior leaders of major political parties ahead of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal’s India visit, Maoist leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha expressed his party’s views.

“Mahakali is a bordering river so the right on its water is equal for Nepal and India,” he told myrepublica.com after the meeting. “There are a few controversial issues on it and without national consensus on those issues, the government should not move forward on it.”

Other parties, however, were in favor of moving forward with the 6000MW project.

The project head briefed the leaders after the project.

“We discussed the project on positive note and we agreed to move forward in some issues like preparing the detail project report,” Deputy Prime Minister Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar said.
