Maoist, cops clash, 8 injured

BANEPA, Sept 18: Three police personnel and five UPCN (Maoist) cadres were injured in a clash that lasted for almost 30 minutes on Thursday at Banepa, Kavre. The clash ensued after the Maoists started pelting stones at Finance Minister Surendra Pandey´s vehicle.



Minister Pandey had reached Banepa to inaugurate the general assembly of Chandeshwari Saving and Credit Cooperatives. The Maoists hurled stones and waved black flags when Minister Pandey reached in front of the Araniko Conference Hall. Police fired nine rounds of tear gas shells to take the situation under control.







A vehicle belonging to area police office, Banepa, was partly damaged during the incident. However, no damage was done to minister Pandey´s vehicle.



Despite Maoist protests, Pandey attended the program. A few journalists were also injured in the incident.



Those injured are undergoing treatment at Scheer Memorial Hospital at Banepa. Police said about 400 security personnel from Nepal Police and Armed Police Force had been mobilized to provide security to the minister.
