Maoist combatants to be brought under Special Committee within a week

KATHMANDU, Jan 15: The government and the UCPN (Maoists) have agreed to bring all cantoned combatants under Special Committee for Supervision, Integration and Rehabilitation by organizing a formal ceremony within this week.



The agreement was reached in a meeting held between Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal at the prime minister’s official residence in Baluwatar Saturday morning. [break]



Talking to media persons after the meeting, Home Minister Bhim Rawal, who was also present in the meeting, said the decision was made as such a function would give a message of emotional unity between the government and the cantoned Maoist combatants.



Rawal said the date for organizing such a ceremony, however, has not been fixed yet.



In a three-point agreement reached on Friday, the government and the Maoist had agreed to bring the cantoned Maoist combatants under Special Committee. They have also agreed to deploy eight-member joint team of each Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Maoist army to seven Maoist cantonments and a Nepal Army Barrack in Chhauni to monitor arms kept in containers.
