POKHARA, Jan 28: Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal has said that the political parties are capable of taking the peace process to a logical end even without the presence of United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN).

He said the political parties have shown the international community that they can accomplish the task of concluding the peace process by bringing the Maoist combatants under the control of Special Committee.[break]

Inaugurating Lekhnath Festival on Friday, the prime minister said the departure of UNMIN would not affect the peace process. The handover of the Maoist combatants under to the Special Committee is an indication that remaining tasks of the peace process would also move ahead smoothly, he said.

He admitted that the parties had failed to promulgate the new constitution on time due to differences among the parties.

“The recently accomplished task is the first important step in integrating and rehabilitating the combatants which has remained as an important part of peace process,” he said. “It wouldn´t be long before we see the Maoists fully transform into a civilian party.”

On the occasion, Prime Minister Nepal also asked Chairman Dahal to implement the commitments as failure to do so would only put him in the bad books of the people.

The prime minister also said the country should focus on economic development once the transition phase is over.

“Time has come to make political differences a thing of the past,” he said.
