Mandela discharged for home treatment

JOHANNESBURG, Jan 28: South Africa´s former president Nelson Mandela was discharged for treatment at home having suffered an acute respiratory infection, the country´s surgeon general said on Friday.



"He has been discharged," said Vejaynand Ramlaken, one of the military doctors assigned to care for the country´s former presidents.[break]



He said Mandela´s family were making arrangements for him to return to his home in Houghton in Johannesburg.



"To us he is stable, but will be subject to intense monitoring," Ramlaken added.
