BIRGUNJ, Feb 11: The east-west Mahendra Highway, which had remained blocked for the past 10 days due to protests by locals demanding establishment of integrated administrative service centers in four central Tarai districts, has opened from Wednesday night.
The highway reopened following decision of all-party meeting held in Regional Administrator Anand Pokhrel´s coordination at Pathlaiya in Bara district Wednesday evening. The meeting, which was attended by all stakeholders including representatives of protest committees, chief district officers and police chiefs of Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi and Mahottari districts, agreed on establishing such service centers in the four districts, said Bara Chief District Officer Kailash Nath Kharel.
Kharel said that the highway would resume completely only from Thursday morning as it would take time to remove the obstructions in several places of the road from Nijgadh in Bara to Bardibas in Mahottari along the highway.
