Martyr Dasharath Chand Memorial Trust conferred the recognition on Maharjan on Friday at a special function organized to mark the 109th birth anniversary of martyr Chand.[break]
Boxer Maharjan was adjudged the best player for the calendar year as he was the only player to win a medal for the country in the 16th Asian Games that concluded in November in Guangzhou, China. Maharjan received Rs 15,000 and a certificate in recognition of his extraordinary performance during the year.
Captain of the Nepali U-19 Women´s Cricket Team Nery Thapa and Captain of Nepali Women´s Football Team Jamuna Gurung received the Best Player awards. Thapa had scored 191 runs to lead his team to clinch the title of ACC U-19 Women´s Cricket Championship held in Singapore in October. Likewise, Gurung had scored 10 goals and captained the Nepali side in the First Women SAF Football Championship held in Bangladesh in November. Thapa and Gurung received Rs 8,000 each for the awards.
Likewise, body-builder Shyam Shrestha, who won a bronze in the World Bodybuilding Championship held in India, also got the Best Player award. He too received Rs 8,000 as part of the award.
The Trust recognised athletes Ashish Chaudhary of Mid-western region and Sharada Kumari Thagunna of Far-western region as Emerging Players of the year and awarded each with Rs 10,000.
Chaudhary and Thagunna were awarded for their performance in the Inter-region National Athletics (the President Cup) concluded last month. Former Prime Minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand, National Sports Council (NSC) Member-secretary Yuvaraj Lama, and NSC officials gave away the awards to the winners.
