Despite frequent protests from the locals, the municipality is planning to build landfill site at Makaitar. [break]
“We have registered a grievance letter against the decision of municipality at the District Administration Office, but they didn´t take it seriously. So we are compelled to take such a step,” Balaram KC, coordinator of retaliation committee against landfill site, said.
The locals smeared soot on the faces of Prem Kumar Sonam, acting executive officer of Panauti municipality and Indra Prasad Adhikari, the administrative officer.
An all party mechanism of the municipality had taken the decision to dump garbage in the area produced from the municipality. Following the decision, the municipality purchased nine-ropanis of land in the area.
The office is planning to spend Rs 3 million provided by Ministry of Local Development to build access road to reach the landfill site.
“We had been there to discuss the access road to the proposed landfill. The group misbehaved with us without hearing us out,” Officer Adhikari complained.
The protesting locals held a corner meeting and compelled the officers to sign a pledge mentioning that no landfill site would be developed in the location.
The infuriated locals are preparing to launch a series of protests against the municipality.
