Lissanevitch finishes with two golds

KATHMANDU, Feb 29: Aslesha Lissanevitch of Central Region on Wednesday bagged another gold medal in the women´s singles of lawn tennis during the Sixth National Games held at the Satdobato Tennis Court, Lalitpur.



Lissanevitch eased past Kalpana Thapa of Central Region 6-0, 6-1 in the women´s singles category. [break]



Lissanevitch had won gold in women´s doubles on Tuesday.



Lissanevitch said it was a great achievement for her to win two gold medals at the National Games. “I could not produce such results during the Fifth National Games and I have worked hard for this achievement,” said the delighted 15-year-old studying in the 10th grade.



In the mixed doubles category, the pair of Mayanka Rana and Rajesh Chhetri of Central Region edged past Ganga Sharma and Raju Shrestha of Western Region 7-5, 6-1 for the gold.







In the men´s singles, Nepal number one Kumar Adhikari of Armed Police Force (APF) entered the final defeating Shree Ram Magar of Central Region 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Likewise, Jitendra Pariyar of Central Region overcame Santosh Khatri of Central Region 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, 6-1 to advance into the final.



In the men´s doubles, Pariyar and Magar´s pair of Central Region thumped Khatri and Chhewang Lama´s pair 6-0, 4-6, 6-0 and entered the final. Similarly, Adhikari and Maheshwar Tiwari´s pair of APF advanced into the final defeating Raju Shrestha´s pair of Western 6-2, 6-0.



Squash



Defending champion and Nepal number one Hira Bahadur Thapa of Western Region and Bhawana Sunuwar of Central Region successfully defended their titles in the squash events of the Sixth National Games held at the Satdobato Squash Academy on Wednesday.



In the men´s final, Thapa lost the first set 15-17 but bounced back to take the other sets 11-8, 11-5, 11-9 against Chhabi Lal Paija of Central Region. Thapa had been in the number one position since 1994. "I have rarely lost a game in the final but Paija gave me a tough challenge in the first set," said the 44-year-old Thapa, adding that he had not faced such a tough challenge in domestic competitions so far. “I will retire from the game if I get defeated by a player who can match my prowess."



In the women´s final, Sunuwar defeated Krishna Thapa of Western Region 11-4, 11-3, 11-3 in straight sets for the title. Central Region bagged gold in the team event while Western Region and Eastern Region secured silver and bronze medals respectively.
