Essentials commodities like lentils have become dearer by 5 to 10 percent over the period. Prices of edible oil have remained unchanged, while the price of sugar has come slightly down. [break]
Pabitra Bajracharya, president of Nepal Retailers´ Association said the price of essential commodities such as lentils have started climbing up by 6 percent in average mainly due to the rise in prices of the products in the Indian market.
"Price rise in India directly affects prices in the local market, as the demand of most of the essential commodities is met through imports from India,” he said, adding, “Decline in production in the country is also helping increase the prices.”
Retailers say lentils have become dearer by Rs 5 to 15 per kg. Prices of popular lentils such as Musuro, Mas, and Rahar have gone up in the market over the period. Price of Musuro Dal has climbed to Rs 95 per kg, up Rs 10 as compared to prices recorded two weeks back.
According to Supath Mulya Pasal - a retailer at Ghattekulo, Rahar Dal has become dearer by Rs 15 per kg over the period. The price of Rahar has climbed to Rs 120 per kg.
Similarly, the price of Mas Dal has increased to Rs 120 per kg from Rs 110 per kg over the period. The prices of Mung Khosta and Chana Dal, however, have remained unchanged at Rs 150 per kg and Rs 60 per kg respectively.
Price of green pea has decreased to Rs 42 per kg from Rs 50 per kg over the period, bringing some respite to consumers. But white pea has become dearer by Rs 5 per kg over the period and is currently selling for Rs 43 per kg.
According to Supath Mulya Pasal, the price of edible oil has remained almost unchanged over the period. While the Dhara brand of mustard oil is selling for Rs 140 per kg, Family brand of mustard will is selling for Rs 110 per liter.
Similarly, the price of soybean oil has also remained stable at Rs 90 per liter. Soybean was selling for Rs 100 per liter about a month ago. Price of sunflower oil has also remained stable at Rs 93 per liter.
Bajracharya said sugar is selling in the range of Rs 72 to Rs 76 per kg in the market, down from Rs 80 per kg recorded over the period.
