Leader of the Nepali Congress, Ramesh Lekhak said, ´The army integration special committee should work more carefully on the monitoring and upkeep of the Maoist fighters and weapons, as the UNMIN officially departed from yesterday.´
The works of the special committee on peace process and army integration so far should be assessed, he said, adding that the political parties should be more alert as another challenge in addition to the peace process and constitution writing is now the monitoring and integration of the Maoist combatants.
An eight-member team comprising two each from Nepal Army, Armed Police, Nepal Police and the UCPN-Maoist will monitor the Maoist´s seven cantonments and Chhauni barrack of the Nepal army as per the agreement between the government and the UCPN-Maoist.
Similarly, the UNMIN will be urged to hand over the tools and accessories to the government and an office of the army integration special committee located at New Baneshwor where the UNMIN was. The special committee office will continue the works on monitoring and rehabilitation.
Member of the army integration special committee, Barsha Man Pun said the six-member mechanism formed as per the three-point agreement, comprising three members from special committee and three others from the special committee secretariat will monitor the UCPN-Maoist´s weapons.
The UNMIN, came here on January 23, 2007 as per the Comprehensive Peace Accord to facilitate the peace process, formally walked out from its role yesterday.
Similarly, CPN-UML leader Pradip Gyawali said the peace process will be led to the logical end and constitution promulgated on time if all political parties are united following the departure of the UNMIN. UNMIN´s departure will help settle the political problems, he expressed hope.
It is high time all peace agreements abided fully and expedited the constitution drafting and peace process, he stressed.
As the leaders expressed their views on post-UNMIN condition, consensus and cooperation among the political parties are essential to settle the peace process and write constitution. The recent exercise of the parties for this has been taken positively.
