KATHMANDU, March 23: The lawmakers, who have started a pressure campaign for timely conclusion of the peace process and constitution writing, have decided to call on the prime minister to expedite efforts to conclude the integration of former Maoist combatants into the Nepal Army without further delay.

A meeting of the lawmakers from major political parties gathered at Singha Durbar on Friday decided to call on the prime minister, who also heads the special committee that is mandated to oversee the tasks of peace process, and the chiefs of major political parties, chairman of the Constituent Assembly (CA) and other key leaders to conclude the twin tasks of peace process and constitution writing before the CA term expires on May 27.[break]

The lawmakers, numbering around 70, from across various political parties also decided to press the key leaders of major political parties not to leave the capital and to concentrate their efforts to conclude the twin tasks. They have also decided to press the leaders to call the meetings of CA´s full House and special committee on regular basis.

"What about ourselves? Are we ready to stay in the valley until May 27?" Yam Lal Kandel, who is currently coordinating the campaign, asked the gathering. Most of the participants said that the rule should apply to them as well. The lawmakers then agreed that they should not leave the capital except for unavoidable reasons.

"At first, we will meet the key leaders and urge them to speed up efforts to conclude the tasks within the given timeframe. We may even have to stage sit-ins if there is no progress within a couple of days because the CA´s final deadline is fast approaching," Kandel announced at the meeting.
