People spend a lot of money to buy the best jewelry available in the market for their life partners. But these days with the price of yellow metal surging every other day, traders say the customers are looking for new designs in less weight.
Yellow metal has glittered by almost Rs 15,000 a tola within a year. Gold was traded at around Rs 40,000 per tola (11.66 4gm) last year while currently it is traded at around Rs 50,000 per tola on average.
“Although the gold price has increased, Nepalis still prefer gold jewelry rather than platinum or silver variants. During the wedding season, people look for the latest designs. That is why, we have introduced a wide range of jewelry,” said Uttam Shakya, proprietor of Surya Bahadur & Sons Jewelry shop at Wotu.
As the price of the yellow metal has increased many folds in last four years, most people are exchanging their old ornaments with new ones available in the market, which are also in the latest designs in keeping with the trend.
“Mostly, during the wedding season people bring their old jewelry and exchange them with the latest readymade designs or ask for a customized design and this trend has been catching up lately as the price of gold is skyrocketing,” said Mahendra Ratna Shakya, newly-elected president of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers´ Association (Negosida) of the Kathmandu district chapter.

Shakya told Republica that 75 percent of the people placing orders for wedding ornaments are exchanging the old jewelry with new ones.
According to the traders, the cheapest wedding ring can be made in 3-gm gold while the most expensive wedding ring can be in fabulous designs studded with diamond and the price may go soaring high.
