KATHMANDU, Aug 29: Members of market monitoring team deployed by the Department of Commerce and Supply Management (DoCSM) were taken aback when they found warehouses of food commodities in Kuleshwar area shut when they reached there for monitoring on Wednesday.

The team had reached the area to find out whether traders were hoarding food commodities ahead of the festive season. [break]

“Though our team reached the area without giving any information, all the warehouses there were closed,” Nara Prasad Bidari, director general of DoCSM, said, adding that this was not the first time traders had shut their warehouses. “This has happened at least three or four times before my appointment to the post.”

Though the team couldn´t monitor warehouses, it inspected Vatika Mini Mart, Manu Kirana Traders, Shah Brothers, Krishna Khadhyana Store, Kuleswor Cold Store, Khadya Kirana Bazaar Marga and Kusum Traders at Kuleswor and Prayush store at Kalimati.

During the inspection, the team found that some stores were not displaying price list, some stores did not have signboard, and some did not have proper weighing machines. “Some were found operating without business registration certificate and some did not have Permanent Account Number (PAN),” a member of the team told Republica.

The department has asked proprietors of the stores to furnish clarification within a week and correct mistakes at the earliest.
