REPUBLICA, Sept 29: In a gesture to welcome Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Kathmandu University's Sustainable Development Scholars felicitated a dozen sweepers of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) on Tuesday.

Kathmandu University's faculty of Sustainable Development organized a rally in which students from school to university level took part to welcome the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The agenda was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on September 26.

The rally started from Maitighar Mandala and converged into a corner meet at Basantapur Darbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A dozen of sweepers assigned to clean the site by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) were given away a token of appreciation for their contribution to keep the place tidy.

Speaking at the gathering, Ram Pode, the sweepers' supervisor, expressed happiness saying that it was the first time anyone had given him credit for the sweeping he has been involved for over three decades.

Parbat Dhungana, assistant professor and program coordinator of the faculty of Sustainable Development at KU, described the relevance of the SDG, which includes 17 goals and 169 targets. "SDG is balanced development to address the reigning global challenges such as poverty, inequality, depleting resources and degrading environment, created by traditional development approach in the past," he said.
