BIRGUNJ, April 22: Indian Mister for External Affairs S M Krishna on Friday laid foundation stone of integrated customs check post and Birgunj-Thori segment of postal road.

These two projects -- integrated check posts in four major customs including Birgunj and postal roads of more than 605 km stretch -- are being implemented with grant assistance from India.[break]

According to officials, the customs check post in Alau will have customs terminal, quarantine, immigration and all customs related services.  It will spread over 100 bighas and is estimated to cost Rs 1.24 billion.

Apart from Birgunj, such integrated customs check posts are being constructed in Biratnagar, Bhirahawa and Nepalgunj as well.

The construction of customs check post in Birgunj, the largest trading point in the country, will be completed within 14 months. Because of integrated services and space availability, it is expected to greatly facilitate Nepal´s trade with India as well as other countries.

According to officials, Birgunj-Thori postal road is one among 19 road segments that India is supporting to build under the Tarai Roads Project. The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 11 billion.

Addressing the function organized to lay foundation stone here on Friday, Krishna on behalf of the Indian government expressed satisfaction over being able to participate in Nepal´s development endeavor. “The formal initiation of these two projects has opened new avenues of development,” said Krishna, adding that the two projects will make vital contribution in Nepal´s development.

Krishna also informed that India has extended assistance of about Rs 58 billion for implementing a total of 400 development projects in Nepal. “Among others, the assistance has mainly been pledged in sectors like education, health, agriculture and construction of roads and bridges,” he added.

Krishna was accompanied by Minister for Physical Planning and Works Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao and Indian envoy to Nepal Rakesh Sood. Krishna returned to Kathmandu right after the completion of the program.
