BIRATNAGAR, Feb 23: Former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has expressed concern over the erosion of religious tolerance while accusing Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal of trying to destabilize the aforementioned tolerance.
The former Prime Minister’s remarks on the day of Shivaratri, celebrated on Monday, were made in reference to the government´s attempt to appoint a Nepali priest at Pashupatinath Temple last December. The move invited controversy within the country and from India.
“The Prime Minister did not understand what the secular state means,” he said while inaugurating the Shivaratri fair at Paropakarghat in Biratnagar. “There was a game to end secularism in the country in the meantime, but it did not succeed.”
Koirala further said, “Pashupatinath was attacked on the pretext of appointing the priest.”
