KATHMANDU, Aug. 4: Kidney patients in Nepal are planning to go on a hunger strike from August 9 to press for addressing their 11-point demand.

The Kidney Victims´ Society gave information about this at a press meet here on Saturday. The society has accused the State of ignoring the issues of the kidney patients.[break]

Relief assistance to kidney patients, an amendment to law related to organ (kidney) transplantation and establishment of a haemodialysis center in each district are among the demands put forth by the society, according to society chairman Raju Tuladhar.

According to statistics made available by the society, around 2.7 million people in the country have kidney-related problems and of them some 27,000 have been suffering from renal failure and they must regularly undergo haemodialysis.

As per the prevailing law related to organs transplantation, only the members of the victim´s family can donate organs to the patient.

It would be a great relief to kidney patients if the government allocated Rs. 50 million annually as assistance for their treatment, said the society.
