LAHAN, April 9: The parents of the kidnapped child, Subas Sah, who was snatched by a gang from Lahan of Siraha district last Friday, have threatened to commit ´mass suicide´ if their child is not released soon or he is harmed.

The threat came after the kidnappers asked for a huge amount in ransom from the impoverished family. The kidnappers have demanded Rs 3 million in ransom, according to Garib Sah, the father of the kidnapped child. "We will commit mass suicide if our son is killed. We cannot pay such a huge amount," he said. [break]

According to Sah, the kidnappers have threatened to kill his son if he failed to pay the ransom money.

"I told them that I am not in a position to pay the ransom rather we are ready to commit mass suicide," he told journalists.

He accused the government of not being serious enough to release his son at the earliest. Sah said the kidnappers have been threatening him by taking undue advantage of the government´s apathy.

The kidnappers telephoned Garib on Friday morning and reiterated their demand for Rs 3 million. Sah said the kidnappers suggested to him that he sell his house and land to arrange the ransom money he wanted his son alive.

The kidnappers had initially demanded Rs 5,000,000 before saying that they will not settle for anything less than Rs 3 million.

They had called Garib on Wednesday night and handed over the phone to Subas after Garib explained he cannot not pay more than Rs 125,000. "Please pay the ransom, even if you have to sell everything, including the house and land," a relative quoted Subas as telling his father over the phone before it was disconnected.

The kidnappers have also warned that shutting down Lahan and deploying police teams will be futile.
