At an interaction program held Wednesday, the youth leaders argued that the political parties should first convince the people that the constitution would be drafted within the extended period before taking such a decision. [break]
CA members Renu Chand, Binda Pandey, Jitendra Sonar, Kunti Shahi, Laxmi Pariyar and Sunil Babu Pant were present at the program.
“We should at least come up with the first integrated draft of the constitution by May 28 before taking a decision to extend the CA deadline,” said UML CA member Pandey. She was of the opinion that the major political parties should convince people that the new constitution would be drafted within the extended period at all cost.
Tarai Madhes Democratic party leader Sonar argued that constitution-making within the deadline is still possible if the political parties agree on federalism and system of governance.
“There were people who did not believe that the CA election would ever take place. But we proved them wrong. If the political parties really put their heads together we can also prove wrong those who say constitution drafting would not be possible within the deadline,” he said.
Similarly, Pant argued that the youth CA members should build up pressure on the top leadership of each party for promulgating the new constitution.
“They should justify why the CA deadline should be extended,” he said, “The country could see a new constitution if the three largest political parties work hard to forge consensus."
He was of the view that youth CA members, who have a majority in the CA, should pressure the leadership of their respective parties to forge consensus on the constitution.
