KATHMANDU, Sept 29: In a bid to encourage customers to ask for VAT bills while buying goods and services, the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) along with Forum for Protection of Consumer Rights Nepal (FPCRN) has announced to carry out a ten-day market monitoring campaign starting September 30.

According to Tanka Mani Sharma, director general of IRD, the campaign is being launched as transaction in the market increases manifold during Dashain festival. "This campaign will also encourage traders to issue VAT bills," he added. [break]

The IRD had inspected 15,000 business enterprises during Dashain last year. "We aim to inspect 20,000 enterprises this year," Sharma added.

Sharma said the government will initiate action against business firms that do not issue VAT bills. "Issuance of VAT bills means business firms are paying tax. It will also help plug revenue leakage," he added.

Jyoti Baniya of FPCRN said the forum will support IRD´s efforts of encouraging customers to ask for VAT bills. "We have arranged 55 consumer rights activists for the purpose," he added.
