KATHMANDU, August 29: Leaders of the UCPN (Maoist) who had been mobilized in the constituencies in the Tarai have warned that the party stands a slim chance of winning seats in Madhes if the dispute between Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Baburam Bhattarai factions is not resolved soon.

Presenting their reports at the party´s ongoing central committee meeting at Parisdanda on Wednesday, they said the party would win seats in Madhes only if the two factions resolve their differences and intensify their poll campaign in unitedly. [break]

According to the CC members, the party had failed to secure seats in the Tarai constituencies due to factional disputes in the party. “

"The reports submitted by CC members mobilized in the Tarai constituencies said that there is a bitter rivalry between the cadres of the two factions. The reports also claimed that the party stands a very slim chance of winning seats without resolving the intra-party dispu”e," Khagaraj Bhatta, a CC member, told Republica.

The intra-party rift between Dahal and Bhattarai factions is deeper in the Tarai constituencies compared to hill constituencies.

The Maoist had failed to secure seats in the Tarai constituencies in the previous CA election due to various reasons. Of these, the Madhes movement was the foremost.

Political analysts say that the Madhes movement aimed at weakening the Maoist´s presence in the Tarai.“

"The reports do not hint at the presence of forces hostile against the party. But resolving factional disputes is not an easy task either," Prakash Pokharel, another CC member, told Republica.

The leaders also suggested to the party leadership to field candidates with a clean image in Madhes. Presenting his report from Sarlahi-4, Dharma Datta Devkota claimed that a Maoist candidate had sold his candidacy to rival party.

The UCPN (Maoist) had mobilized central committee members in the 240 election constituencies for a month to asses the party´s prospects for the upcoming CA polls.
